Descendants of Francois Bourgouin

Generation No. 1

1. Francois1 Bourgouin was born Abt. 1620 in Frontenay le Comte, France, and died Aft. 1641 in France. He married Andree Boslard Abt. 1641 in Larochelle, France.

Notes for Francois Bourgouin:

The spelling of "Bourgoin" is used in genealogy data obtained from Ronald Burgoyne of Thamesville, Ontario. Also, in Tanguay's "Dictionaire Genealogique des Familles Canadiennes" the "Bourgoin" spelling is used and recorded exclusively for four generations born in Quebec including, Claude, Louis Francois, Jean Baptiste and Alexandre. Tanquay indicates that the variation of the "Bourgoin" surname can be spelled as Bourgouin and Bourguignon. In Godbout in "Our Ancestors in XVII Century" he uses the "Bourgouin" spelling for Francois, Pierre, Claude and Louis Francois; he also comments on the etymology of the name and states that "Bourgoin" spelling is the same and that an old form of the name is derived from "Bourguignon". The International Genealogical Index (IGI) given by the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints records Francois, Pierre and Claude with the "Bourgouin" spelling; from Claude's children forward including our direct ancestors, Louis Francois, Jean Baptiste, Alexandre, Jean Baptiste (John) and Michel are recorded with the "Bourgoin" spelling. Michel's children born in Maine are recorded with the "Bourgoin" spelling although those children born in both Maine and Minnesota used either the "Bourgouin" or "Burgoyne" spelling.

I have used the spelling recorded in the IGI records. I have found in some historical documents for New Brunswick a "Bourgoyne" spelling. Later, where recorded, in Manitoba the "Bourgouin" and "Burgoyne" spellings are used. The "Bourgoin" spelling is the most common but is synonymous with "Bourgouin". Please note the table below giving the numbers of listed telephone numbers in provinces and states (and in France) where the "Bourgouin's' settled.

Notes for Pierre Bourgouin:

Pierre Bourgouin (or Bourgoin) dit Bourguignon was born 1639 - 1641 in Fontenay-le-Comte (Fontenay the Count) of the Diocese of La Rochelle in Western France and was baptised in the parish of Notre Dame. Pierre arrived in Quebec City of New France. The first record of Pierre in Quebec City is reported as July 27, 1662 by genealogist and historian Marcel Fournier and 1665 by Archange Godbout in "Our Ancestors in XVII Century". During a census in 1666 Pierre is found to reside in Beauport, Quebec, at the residence of Jean Gibaud, reported as 25 years old and engaged in domestic work.

Beauport now part of Quebec City is located a few kilometers north of the centre of Quebec City. Catherine Basset arrives in Quebec City in 1667 and is a "la fille du roi" or "daughter of the king". On October 15, 1667, Catherine Basset who is Calvinist converts to Catholic and Pierre marries Catherine in Beauport, Quebec on October 17, 1667. The marriage contract is initialed by the notary, Gilles Rageout, on October 9, 1667.

Beauport, Quebec is located about 8 km north of Quebec City; it now is part of Quebec City. In 1681 the Bourgouin family is residing in St, Antoine Tilly; however during 1681 Pierre is awarded 4 arpents (acres) of land at Pointe aux Trembles near the north end of the Isle de Montreal, Quebec under the Seigneour de Villiers; also a son Pierre is born here in 1681. In 1687 Pierre acquires land at Ste. Antoine Tilley. A later daughter, Marie, is born in Quebec City in 1683. Ste. Antoine Tilley is south of Quebec City on the south side of the St. Laurence River. Both Catherine and Pierre die in Beauport in 1716 and 1719, respectively.

He married Marie Madeliene Godin November 1, 1787 in Kamourska, Quebec, daughter of Antoine Godin and Marie Bergeron.

Notes for Alexandre Bourgoin:

Alexandre Bourgoin was one of a small group of Acadians who stayed in the Fredericton area after the Loyalists arrived in 1783 and successfully obtained a large land grant (possibly around 200 acres) in 1789. It remains to be determined where his land grant was located but it is significant but it may have been in the Kingsclear area as three(3) of his children were born here and Alexandre died here in 1831. His date of arrival into New Brunswick is not known but is probably in the period of 1777 to 1783. His sister Genevieve Bourgoin (born before 1765) married Simon Martin in 1777; Simon Martin had been living in Fredericton since 1768. It appears that Simon Martin was the sister of Felecite Martin. Alexandre married Marie Godin about November 1, 1787 in Fredericton and it appears the ceremony was repeated in Kamourska on November 7, 1787. Several children were born from the late 1780's to the mid 1790's in or near Madawaska although there first child, Alexandre, was born west of Fredericton in 1785. About half of Alexandre's children (8) are recorded as being born in or near the Madawaska area of New Brunswick. Following this, in the period of about 1807 and forward, a further nine were born in Ecoupeg, Hautepok (French Village), Acadian Settlement west of Fredericton, and in Kingsclear, New Brunswick; these villages are within a few to several miles west of Fredericton.

Many of the Acadians left Fredericton and adjacent areas in the the late 1780's as Loyalist immigrants arrived; it is reported that up to one half of the Acadians migrated to the Madawaska area of New Brunswick/Maine/Quebec.

Notes for Marie Madeliene Godin:

Marie Madeline Godin was born in Kamourska, Quebec but resided in Fredericton. Her parents, Antoine Godin and Marie Bergeron were Acadian.

He married Sophie Fournier October 26, 1830 in St. Basile, New Brunswick, daughter of Jean Fournier and Marie-Venerande Violette.

Notes for Jean Baptiste Bourgoin:

Jean (or John) was born in an Acadian settlement reportedly 14-16 km west of Fredericton, up river on the St. John River. His actual birth date remains to be confirmed - the most recent date given by the IGI is before 1815 and is the 14th of 16 children of Alexandre Bourgoin and Marie Godin. An older date is also given as 1803. Jean was married in in Ste. Basile Church in Ste. Basile.

During a survey of land holdings along the St. John River in 1831 by Kavanaugh and Dean for the State of Maine (New Brunswick Historical Society Collections, no 7, published 1907, page 423), a Jean Bourgoyne and Moyse Bourgoyne are recorded. Jean Bourgoyne is referred to as Acadian and "began the lot clearing six years ago - the claim is for 60 rods frontage, has an house and barn and 16 acres are cleared" on the south bank of the St. John River. The total land area could be 200 acres and is on the south bank, probably just above what is now Van Buren, Maine.

Immediatedly up river and adjacent to Jean's lot was a lot being cleared and occupied by his brother Moise.

Many of the children of Alexandre Bourgoin, including Jean, settled on the upper reaches of the St. John River on both sides in what is now Van Buren and Madawaska, Maine, Edmunston and St. Basile, NB and other small communities.

Jean and Sophie had 11 children between 1832 and 1852 of which most or all appear to have been born in either Van Buren or Madawaska, Maine.
